For something to be beautiful, the system that created it must also be beautiful.

It all began in Kenya.

We saw talent, beauty and potential. With a rich artisan economy, generational ingenuity and impressive technical skills, we were inspired by the talent of local artisans in Kenya.

We saw a problem.

The artisan craft sector is the second-largest employer in the developing world. However, it is also one of the most marginalized. Limited to local sales, millions of talented artisans are trapped in micro-economies, unable to earn enough to support their families and businesses.

We created the solution.

We simply looked around. Cell phones.

Kenya is nicknamed Silicon Savannah for a reason— the entire economy is mobile-driven.

Through digital banking instead of a cash economy, plus accessibility to cell phones, we created a simple, commercially viable way to connect local artisans with the international market and industry.

With unique and unbounded entrepreneurial spirit and a willingness to try new things, Kenyans are ready and well-positioned to disrupt old patterns of poor infrastructure and economic hardship.

So…What’s a Virtual Factory?

Essentially, it’s a proprietary phone app we developed for a mobile-first human network.

Our supply chain innovation uses smartphones to connect independent artisan entrepreneurs directly to our global customers through a virtual factory mobile app, which allows artisans to receive orders, apply for micro-financing, fulfill orders, and get paid.

Our virtual factory standardizes manufacturing in an informal market, provides artisan leaders with the tools, techniques, and innovative ways to preserve and improve heritage techniques to reach scale.

The results speak for themselves.

Our revolutionary jewelry supply chain increases income 5x for marginalized artisans in the developing world.

Our Model

Multiplies the Opportunities

Every time an artisan entrepreneur invests in their workshop, they create more opportunity. For every 1 new machine, 2 additional jobs are created.

Our Goal

Development and Growth

Typically, 3-5 people are on a team at a workshop. After 1-2 years of apprenticeship, an artisan is encouraged to leave and build their own workforce and workshop.

We Believe

Independence & Sovereignty

We cap our work at 50% or less of an artisan’s total capacity to ensure an artisan has freedom and not sole reliance on SOKO. This encourages long-term, sustainable sovereignty.
