Nestled among the chaos of fruits stands and basket shops in Nairobi’s City Market is a haven where minds are enlightened, self-esteem is cultivated, and handmade bags are refined: the Hawkers Market Girls Centre (HMGC). When you order a product from Soko (like our delectable new Shaya Necklaces!), you will find it wrapped with love in one of HGMC’s linen, drawstring bags.
The artisans behind the bags are part of a one-year program called Learn and Earn where they are educated on vocational skills such as sewing (we saw them work with the most beautiful antique machines), hairdressing, and accounting so that they can provide for themselves and their families financially. The centre began as a way to equip girls from the slums of Nairobi with life and leadership skills. Many of these women go on to long-term places of employment and university. Graduates from HGMC now serve in the medical field and even in politics.
It’s the overcoming spirit of these women and our talented artisans that daily excites us at Soko.
