When art, music and poetry mixes with a stylish and savvy crowd, you have the makings of a magical day - what we experienced during a recent visit to an artist hangout dubbed ‘Kiota’ (the Swahili word for nest) held at the Kuona Trust. Kuona Trust Centre for Visual Arts in Kenya promotes innovative contemporary arts practice in Kenya. In addition to serving as a gallery and supporting an artists residency program, Kuona is a popular venue for cultural events such as Kiota.
Last month’s Kiota was a relaxed outdoor affair held on the Kuona Trust lawn. The place was packed with artists, fans, and friends who mingled with each other or enjoyed the great array of artwork from artists in training or residency at Kuona. It was a festival of sound, ranging from mellow tunes interjected by jazz sounds to brief episodes of poetry and beat-boxing - the perfect soundtrack for an afternoon spent absorbing enjoying the Nairobi sunshine.
