If you’ve ordered a Soko piece, then you’ve also received one of the beautiful brightly printed cloth bags pictured above. Fun and useful, these gift bags are also eco-friendly!
Our partners at Riri Jewellery designed them from fabric leftover from tailors in Nairobi’s communities of Mathare and Kibera. The colorful prints, which would otherwise become waste material, are repurposed into jewelry bags by young women working to sustain their trade in tailoring and dressmaking. This sustainability initiative leads to waste reduction of fabric, which is a major contributor to the high levels of garbage in notorious dumpsites within Nairobi.
While producing their own line of trendsetting jewelry, Riri Jewellery shares Soko’s commitment to empowerment with a goal of advancing youth enterprise as a strategy of peacebuilding in Africa. We’re proud to work with another African social enterprise helping connect local artisans with global markets, grow a culture of entrepreneurship, and promote the talents of young Africans.
